Timing yourself
Hey guys, I wanted to touch on another strategy to help best utilize your time. It's pretty simple, but highly effective: timing yourself. When you sit down to read, finish an assignment, or write an essay, use a clock app (stopwatch function) to see how long it actually takes you to finish 10 math problems, or read 5 pages out of your textbook. It may surprise you that you actually need much more time than you think you do to complete a task.
For example, I used to give myself a half an hour to read 30 pages. I figured, 30 isn't much, I can probably knock that out and work on something else. However, I was repeatedly getting behind on my work for other classes because it would take me so long to read.
So: I sat down, turned on the stop watch, and read a page. It took me 3 minutes to finish a single textbook page! I had never given myself enough time.
If I wanted to read 30 pages, it would take 90 minutes
(30 pages x3 minutes each =90 minutes!)
Nowadays, I give myself 3 minutes x the number of pages I need to finish when scheduling.
I also know it takes ~15 hours to write an essay (which I can then break up into 3 five hour chunks) and I can finish a 2 paragraph written response in an hour.
This strategy is especially helpful when it comes to assignments that are repetitive: connect, tech, study guide: how long will it take me to finish these things and when will I do them? You can even use it in other areas of your life: (how long does it take me to clean my bathroom, or do a load of laundry?)
Good Luck! 🕔
